BCF Gateway Scholarship

The BCF Gateway Scholarship is designed to support the higher education of a qualified Virtuoso Strings Orchestra member pursuing a three-year undergraduate degree. The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $10,000 per year, with a maximum commitment of $30,000 over three years.

We congratulate Rodi Ngwa, 2026 recipient of the scholarship.

Rodi's Story
Originally from Myanmar, my mother and I relocated to New Zealand when I was just one year old. For the past 17 years, New Zealand has been our home. I have recently finished my secondary education at Whitby Collegiate and am now preparing to begin my studies in Health Science at Otago University.

A Lifelong Journey with Music
Music has played a significant role in my life from a very young age. When I was about eight years old, I joined the Virtuoso Strings Orchestra. Over more than ten years, I had the privilege to learn the violin, and many of my fondest childhood memories are of performing with the orchestra. Through these experiences, I discovered not only the joy of making music with friends, but also the importance of community and the value of sharing in something meaningful together.

Being part of Virtuoso Strings gave me much more than the ability to play an instrument—it offered me invaluable life lessons. As time went on, I had the opportunity to become a tutor and mentor for younger students. Helping and encouraging others allowed me to grow as a person, building my confidence and developing leadership abilities. Taking part in chamber music competitions taught me the importance of commitment and perseverance in achieving goals.

Looking ahead, I hope to pursue a career in a clinical field where I can support other refugees and, if the opportunity arises, return to Myanmar to assist children and families in need. My mother has been a constant source of support and encouragement, raising me on her own and providing stability throughout my life. My ambitions are deeply shaped by my family and the Kachin community, who inspire me to contribute positively to the lives of others.

I am grateful to have received an Otago University scholarship as well as the BCF Gateway Scholarship, which is awarded to members of the Virtuoso Strings Orchestra. These scholarships have enabled me to stay at Salmond Residential Hall in Dunedin for my first year at university and have covered my tuition fees. Without this vital support, I would not have had the opportunity to pursue higher education or work towards my goals. I am truly thankful for all the help I have received along the way.

Applications for the 2027 scholarship will open in August 2026.
